South Yorkshire’s mayor Oliver Coppard has unveiled the ‘South Yorkshire People’s Network’ – a new vision and brand for the region’s public transport.

The new brand, designed by MHD Partnership, alludes to the ‘People’s Republic of South Yorkshire’, the nickname for South Yorkshire in the 1980s when the region’s left-wing political leaders opposed Margaret Thatcher’s government. Their policies included an extensive network of subsidised public transport services.

The new brand will be rolled across the region, reflecting a ‘once-in-a-generation’ change in the ownership and management of public transport in the region. Trams are already back under public control, and starting next year, buses will be too, reversing the deregulation of buses that was led by the Thatcher government.

The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority explained: “The … People’s Network brand reflects South Yorkshire’s pride in taking back control and the determination to build something better. Colours of molten orange, grey and asphalt black speak to the region’s history of industry, Northern grit, and resilience.”
