Engineering Director

How do you fancy leading a multi-site engineering operation that delivers services which keep our communities connected?

Stagecoach South Wales provides 11 million passenger journeys last year, employing over 750 colleagues and operating over 350 vehicles from depots in Aberdare, Blackwood, Brynmawr, Caerphilly, Cwmbran, Merthyr and Porth. Not only are we a highly successful business, we’re also an integral part of the communities which we serve, connecting people through the operation of over 12 million miles of routes last year across the region.

We’re currently recruiting an Engineering Director – part of the senior team in the business, who will be at the heart of delivering these services, so the importance of this role cannot be understated.

So what will you be letting yourself in for we hear you ask!

As you may be aware, public transport, as with many other sectors, is recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. We continue our road to recovery and restoring the confidence of our customers to travel regularly again with us. The demands associated with running engineering services in urban and rural environments remain, ensuring this is one of the most challenging and rewarding roles in the industry.

Day to day you’ll ensure the smooth running of the engineering function across the business, responsible for Safety and regulatory compliance, maximising productivity and delivery, whilst also focusing on providing strong leadership and development to an amazing team of multi-skilled engineering colleagues. You can’t do this role justice without amazing people around you, so you’ll develop an engaged, talented and high performing team who are focused on delivery, innovation and continuous improvement.

It goes without saying that you’ll need to make sure that engineering is run efficiently, and whilst that will give you plenty to keep you in the office, you’ll definitely be out and about in the depots. Visible presence is crucial – and it will give you an incredible exposure to the business set to continue to deliver on the performance improvement agenda.

If you are interested in this role, it’s fair to say we need some specific experience:

You’ll either be:

  • An existing Engineering Director looking for a new challenge or change of scenery, or –
  • A well-established Engineering Manager, Fleet Engineer
  • or Chief Engineer with a proven track record who is ready to make the step to ED.
  • And whilst it’s great if you’ve got PCV experience, don’t worry if you don’t – we can teach you the bus part if you’re in HGV, LGV, rail, aviation, plant, farm, construction, manufacturing etc.

  • You’ll be able to evidence your ability to build high performing teams, and provide trusted, inclusive and collaborative leadership.
  • Given the political agenda around public transport, you’ll need to be comfortable developing key stakeholder relationships.
  • You’ll be able to demonstrate evidence of managing change– and be focussed equally on the people agenda and on customer centricity. We want to be both an Employer of Choice and an Operator of Choice.

And that’s about it!

Head office is at our brand new depot in Cwmbran, so if you’re not already living in wonderful Wales or the surrounding areas, you’ll need to be happy to relocate.

So if you’re equipped and committed to step into this incredible role, please apply via our careers site by 1st July 2022.
