Arriva received the highest number of shortlisted entries for this year’s prestigious UK Bus Awards.

The shortlist was announced last week at a live ceremony at the Museum of Transport, Greater Manchester. It contains a record 108 names – of people, projects and organisations – whittled down from over 250 nominations received by the six panels of independent judges.

Deutsche Bahn-owned Arriva received 22 shortlisted entries – more than double the 10 it received last year.

Go-Ahead Group achieved the second highest number of shortlisted entries (18), followed by Stagecoach (12), RATP Dev (9) and FirstGroup (8).

As usual, the winner of the coveted ‘UK Bus Operator of the Year’ prize will be selected from the winners of the City, Shire and Independent categories. Table-topping Arriva is represented by Arriva Merseyside in the Top City Operator category. It is one of 14 companies that could be named UK Bus Operator of the Year, but current champion Nottingham City Transport is not one of them.

Go-Ahead Group has three operating companies competing for the top prize: Brighton & Hove Buses in the City category and Go South Coast and Oxford Bus Company in the Shire category. Stagecoach will meanwhile be pinning its hopes on Stagecoach Manchester and Stagecoach East Scotland. Local authority-owned Lothian Buses and Blackpool Transport are also shortlisted.

We have some truly inspirational people working in our industry, leading innovation and outstanding improvements in the customer experience

The shortlisted entries cover 19 categories, ranging from Top National Bus Driver to the New Horizons award (see page opposite).

Two new app-based demand responsive minibus services are shortlisted for the New Horizons award, which recognises new thinking in the bus industry – Arriva’s ArrivaClick service in Sittingbourne and RATP’s Slide Bristol. Also shortlisted for this award is Transdev Blazefield’s new VAMOOZ app, where users browse the range of destinations on offer or, alternatively, make a suggestion of their own choosing.

Mark Yexley, chairman of the UK Bus Awards, commented: “We have some truly inspirational people working in our industry, leading innovation and outstanding improvements in the customer experience. They show unrivalled commitment in delivering a first-class service day in, day out. We’re very proud to be able to recognise and reward these people and initiatives that really make a difference.”

The 2017 UK Bus Awards will be presented at a lunchtime ceremony on 21 November 2017 at the prestigious Troxy venue in London’s East End, hosted by BBC News presenter Jane Hill.
