Awards recognise the hard work going into providing better facilities and benefits for cyclists on Britain’s railways

Rail users and organisations are invited to nominate cycle-friendly initiatives that help train travellers take advantage of pedal power.

ATOC’s annual National Cycle Rail Awards, sponsored by Cyclepods, showcases the best examples of projects and people that make it easier for passengers to take their bikes to the station or on trains. Passenger Transport is the official media partner.

This year the organisers are asking the public to nominate the Staff Member of the Year, recognising the front line rail staff that assist and support cycle-rail users on their journeys. Budding photographers could also win one of two Garmin VIRB Elite cameras for the best photographs of cycle-rail travel.

The awards, now in their 11th year, recognise outstanding and innovative schemes, groups and individuals that have improved or encouraged more combined cycle and rail travel, such as better bike facilities or customer service.

The rail industry has more than doubled the number of cycle spaces at rail stations in the last five years from 25,000 to more than 61,000, and that number is set to rise to 75,000 by 2017.

In March this year the Department for Transport announced that a further £14.5m had been granted to improve cycle facilities at stations. This will build upon the work that has already been done and help to make further significant improvements to cycle-rail facilities across the country in the coming years.

Conrad Haigh, head of integrated transport at ATOC, said: “Cycle-rail journeys are growing in popularity and the rail industry wants to make it as easy as possible for passengers to make more of them. Improvements are underway at hundreds of stations across the country, making cycling an option for many more people.”

“Our awards celebrate the people who are making this possible, recognising the hard work going into providing better facilities and benefits for cyclists.”
