Group wants to return GNER brand to the East Coast Main Line and use fleet of Pendolinos to run faster London-Newcastle-Edinburgh services

Arriva has announced plans to shake-up competition on the East Coast Main Line with a new high speed service linking London, Newcastle and Edinburgh.

The Deutsche Bahn-owned group is making the bid through its Alliance Rail Holdings subsidiary using the Great North East Railway (GNER) brand, which was used by Sea Containers when it operated the East Coast franchise between 1996 and 2007.

The limited stop service would be operated by a new fleet of Alstom Pendolino trains, linking London and Edinburgh in just three hours and 43 minutes.
