Nine out of 10 tram passengers are satisfied with their journey according to this year’s Tram Passenger Survey, published last month by Transport Focus.

Over 4,900 tram passengers in Blackpool, Greater Manchester, the West Midlands, Nottingham, Sheffield and Edinburgh were surveyed. The results show continued satisfaction during a year which saw significant investment across many of the networks surveyed.

Three single line ‘networks’ achieved the highest satisfaction scores: Nottingham Express Transit achieved an overall approval rating of 96%, closely followed by Blackpool and Edinburgh Trams (which entered service in May 2014) on 95%.

The lowest rating was given to the UK’s largest tram network, Manchester Metrolink, although it still achieved overall satisfaction of 85%. However, Metrolink was the only operator to improve its score, up from 83% last year.

Amongst fare-paying passengers across all networks, 61% were satisfied with the value for money of their journey, compared to 46% for rail passengers and 63% for bus passengers in Autumn 2014

For individual networks, Blackpool received the highest rating for value for money (86%), followed by Edinburgh Trams (83%). The lowest value for money score was Metrolink (48%).

Commenting on the
results, David Sidebottom, director of Transport Focus (formerly Passenger Focus), said: “These results are good news for tram passengers, operators and transport authorities.

“Continuing high levels of tram passenger satisfaction demonstrates what can be done when these survey results are used to identify and deliver improvements that matter most to passengers. And the evidence from some areas shows they are doing just that. For example, the introduction of more new trams in Manchester and the West Midlands has increased capacity and enhanced the passenger experience. The right approach can make a big difference.”
