Icomera’s mobile broadband gateway is popular with bus and coach operators worldwide, and now the next generation is about to be launched

It was 10 years ago that Icomera and the Swedish/Norwegian rail operator Linx launched the world’s first commercial passenger WiFi service. At the time, only a fraction of users’ laptops were WiFi equipped and smartphones were in their infancy. Since then WiFi access has become a given.

Today Icomera is the world-leading provider of on-board WiFi solutions, with award winning products for both rail and road-based passenger transport.

The company offers bus and coach operators free 30-day trials of its Moovbox M Series mobile broadband gateway. Simple-to-install, and backed up by a service package and customer services team that is always available, the solution has now been adopted to provide WiFi on many services worldwide. In the UK, this includes major routes for Stagecoach, Arriva, First, Go-Ahead, National Express and others. Almost every airport in the UK now has a transport operator offering Icomera WiFi on board. These prime airport routes include National Express coach services between London and Stansted airport.

“The installation of WiFi on our Stansted airport coaches ensures that people stay connected with friends, family and colleagues throughout their journey,” explained Andrew Cleaves, managing director, National Express UK Coach. “Using mobile technology will be

an increasingly important part of what we offer our customers.”

However, while responding to the evolving needs to transport users, internet access on board also presents bus and coach providers with many other possibilities. Icomera’s systems allow vehicle tracking and live on board CCTV footage, as well as 4G-ready broadband.

Icomera’s customers have been keen to leverage the built-in GPS functionality of the Moovbox to track their fleets in real time. “While the WiFi service was the primary driver, the fact that the Icomera solution also offered integrated vehicle location was a major factor in our decision to commit to a commercial roll out once the [free] trial was over and the technology proven,” said a Stagecoach representative.

Icomera is constantly innovating and evolving its product range. At this month’s Euro Bus Expo 2012 show exhibition at the Birmingham NEC, Icomera will be launching and showing its new M300 series of routers. These are smaller, easier to install and have increased functionality. They can support a number of operational applications to increase revenue and save costs. Visit stand 5/T141.
