Plans to expand Walrus card outside transport.

Merseytravel has announced that it will begin rolling out its new smart ticketing product, branded Walrus, in a phased approach over the next two years.

From this autumn, holders of the annual Trio season ticket will move over to the new product and a trial of pay-as-you-go cards is expected to commence in winter 2012. Full pay-as-you-go functionality will be added to the Walrus ticketing product line-up from summer 2013.

Merseytravel says that it will be the first smart ticketing scheme to boast non-transport related products as the card will be valid for transactions at a number of Merseyside tourist attractions.

The PTE also has plans to expand Walrus to include an e-purse facility in the future that will allow card users to buy small value goods from convenience stores, for example.
