Envirox additive is helping Stagecoach to achieve a 5% reduction in fuel consumption by its buses.

Stagecoach has re-introduced Energenics’ fuel saving additive Envirox across the whole of its London operation following its re-entry into the bus market in the capital last year.

Stagecoach reacquired its former East London operation in October 2010, giving the company a 15% share of the tendered London bus market, and it is moving forward with its turnaround plan for the 1,400-vehicle business. One of the early decisions taken after the acquisition was to re-introduce the use of the Envirox additive, which is used elsewhere in Stagecoach’s UK bus operations and is delivering around a 5% reduction in fuel consumption and associated emissions.

Each of the company’s 10 London depots has been fitted with the latest type of dosing equipment, which injects Envirox automatically into the diesel fuel flow on delivery from the road tanker in the correct ratio. This means reliable and accurate dosing is achieved without the requirement for depot staff to be in attendance.

Over the past six months, the Energenics team have provided a full support programme involving weekly monitoring visits, fuel sampling and fine tuning of the new dosing units.

Stagecoach director Sam Greer said: “Stagecoach was the first major transport group to pioneer the use of Envirox and we have a major strategy right across our business to reduce the carbon footprint of our operations. The fuel additive also makes good financial sense for our business. Using the fuel additive is one of the many ways we are delivering greener, smarter travel to our customers.”

Envirox is based on a well known oxidation catalyst widely used in catalytic converters. The material has been re-engineered using nanotechnology to allow it to be delivered as a diesel fuel treatment. This ensures a cleaner burn within the combustion chamber, resulting in improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions. It also facilitates the removal of carbon deposits from the engine and diesel particulate filters.

As well as helping to combat the present high diesel fuel prices, Energenics believes the value of using the additive will grow in April 2012 when the 20% reduction in Bus Service Operators’ Grant given to operators will effectively increase the net fuel price by approximately 8p a litre.
